This idea to promote our new found freedom came up over a bottle of wine one warm June evening on my sister's porch. My nephew had just graduated high school and we were raising a toast to the next step my sister and brother in law were embarking on. My wife and I had already achieved this right of passage of becoming "Empty-Nesters" the previous June after our daughter's graduation.
I believe our conversation turned to the friends and family that had grade school aged children or even younger still and we thought of how far they have left to travel. "YIKES" It was during this conversation, my sister made the comment that will forever resonate in our ears. "Have Fun, We're Done!".
This was not meant to be a meanspirited assault on the couples who are just starting out, or have a ways to go, it is merely to say "been there, done that, don't want to do that again". God bless those of you with youngens, it is just not for us anymore. We do anticipate and look forward to being grandparents (in due time), but even then, the kids won't be around 24/7 and when we get tired, we can always send them home all sugared up to their parents. (Our former kids)!! So to all of you who have parenting miles left in front of you, we sympathize with your plight, but, "Have Fun, We're Done"!!
